Sweetland Wind Farm
200 MW | Hand County, South Dakota | COD: October 2023
About Sweetland:
Sweetland is a 200 MW wind project in Hand County, SD that produces enough clean energy each year to power the equivalent of 82,10 homes’ annual energy usage. The project will continue to support local communities in South Dakota through the generation of significant annual tax revenue. 100 percent of Sweetland’s electricity is contracted to a third-party offtaker through a Power Purchase Agreement.
Alongside construction partners, Scout expedited the construction process for the project, completing construction in just over five months, outperforming the initial nine-month timeframe, while maintaining its emphasis on safety and quality. Sweetland is currently operating in the SPP region as one of the only wind projects interconnected with WAPA. Scout Clean Energy manages the operation and maintenance of the project and provides all commercial oversight for the project.
Community Impacts:
Giving Back
Sweetland will put approximately 24 million dollars back into the Hand County community over its 30-year lifespan.
Birds with Backpacks:
In the first study of its kind, Scout partnered with South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks and put GPS “backpacks” on prairie grouse and lek on-site to track their movements and determine if a wind farm may have any effects on sharp-tailed grouse habitat use, survival, and reproduction. The study will occur over a span of three years, with two years of study occurring post-construction.
Cultural Resource Protection:
Our developers worked closely with South Dakota tribal entities to preserve and protect cultural resources on-site.
Community Celebration:
As the project finished construction, Scout, our landowners, and their family and friends came to our first-ever blade signing event.
