Director of Development – Power-to-X

Scout Clean Energy is a leading US renewable energy developer, owner and operator headquartered in Boulder, Colorado. Summary Description

As the Director of Development – Power-to-X, you will drive the integration of Scout’s U.S.-based renewable energy projects with onsite load. You will work with key members of the Scout team to deliver on new business models, building development strategies and the processes needed to support them. Your previous experience with real estate development, especially in rural communities, will enable you to develop, gain support for, and implement creative solutions that capitalize on new business opportunities.

You will contribute to setting our team’s strategic direction and then lead your team’s execution of the resulting plan.  Through a combination of coaching your team and doing some of the work yourself, you will be responsible for the delivery of profitable projects that meet all project milestones.

With a focus on customer facilities that are co-located with existing Scout project sites, you will guide the team’s identification of, strategic development for, and delivery of the needed real estate, environmental, and permitting functions. Externally, you will support the team’s development of relationships with landowners, community members, regulators, and government officials to gain project support:

  • Ensure effective communication with stakeholders, including customers; landowners; and federal, state and local officials.
  • Secure necessary land rights and leases to enable site development.
  • Take the lead role in obtaining local, state, and/or federal permits.
  • Shape the team’s positioning for and approach to complex negotiations that create solutions to project-specific challenges.
    • Typical issues include land agreements, tax abatement agreements, and various others.
  • Standardize management of consultants and external parties to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Make sound decisions under challenging circumstances using available data and your experience.

Internally, you will collaborate with other Scout staff to align the Development team’s operations to

  • Engage with the internal origination and legal teams to inform customer outreach and negotiation strategies.
  • Coordinate with procurement, construction, and finance teams to develop and execute effective project plans.
  • Integrate the feedback of Scout team members into your project approach to achieve superior results.
  • Establish team and project goals and objectives in line with the overall business plans and objectives.
  • Implement long-term company strategy and initiatives as related to the development of wind projects.

You will join the Development team, reporting directly to the Vice President of Development. You will work in parallel to the Director – East Region, Director – West Region, and Director of New Projects, who have responsibility for other phases of development.

You will be most successful in this role if you have the ability to get into the details of the project in real time. Your team will include one Associate Project Manager, allowing you to advance your projects more efficiently. You will provide directional feedback and develop content yourself. Understanding the longer term impacts of certain approaches and decisions will help you guide the team’s work and professional development.

Qualifications

Work Experience and Skillset

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college program.
  • 5+ years of real estate development experience, preferably in rural communities.
  • Considerable experience leading mid- to late-stage development projects, including extensive knowledge around real estate, permitting, and environmental.
  • Understanding of the dynamics of integrating onsite load with onsite generation.
  • Proven track record of leading complex negotiations that involve commercial, legal, regulatory, and practical considerations.
  • Leadership of growing teams, demonstrating team member development and achievement of financial and other operational goals.
  • Experience navigating project financing, construction lender, and other due diligence processes.
  • Strong understanding of the relationships within a project schedule in order to prioritize teams’ resource allocation.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of key value drivers for renewable power projects.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and visual communication skills

Organizational Fit

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a flat organization, successfully leveraging the expertise of multiple colleagues in different lines of reporting.
  • Strong communication, project management and team-building skills experience working with cross- functional internal and external technical advisors and stakeholders.
  • Ability to multi-task and arbitrate between conflicting priorities with clear target setting and follow- through capability in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Willing and available to travel as needed (approximately two trips per month).
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

 Timeline and Location

This position will begin as soon as possible.

Scout prefers Denver/Boulder-based candidates (current location or open to future relocation). Scout also invites applications from candidates with a U.S.-based location who are willing to travel to Boulder for at least one week per month.

Compensation

Target base salary: $150,000 - $180,000. Open to negotiation for the right candidate.
